The overnight clerk at a Fredericksburg 7-Eleven was stabbed early today in an apparent robbery attempt, police said.

The incident occurred at 3:25 a.m. at 1240 Jefferson Davis Highway, near the University of Mary Washington.

Natatia Bledsoe, spokesperson for the Fredericksburg Police Department said the clerk reported that he was outside sweeping the sidewalk when he was approached from behind by an unknown black male who demanded money.

The clerk said he didn’t have any cash, and the man stabbed him in the lower torso before running from the scene.

The clerk, 31, went inside the store, locked the door and called 911.

He was taken to Mary Washington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as a black male, 25-30 years old, under 5’9″ in height and less than 220 pounds. He was wearing a black hoodie and jeans. He was last seen running on Augustine Avenue away from the store.

A police K9 ran a track from the crime scene and officers from the Fredericksburg Police and UMW Police searched the area extensively, but the suspect was not located.

The investigation is ongoing.
