Spotsylvania fire destroys garage and vehicles
A fire Tuesday evening in the Wilderness section of Spotsylvania County destroyed a garage and the two vehicles inside, resulting in an estimated $100,000 in damage.
According to Fire Chief Monty Willaford, the home was located in the 12800 block of Pelham Drive, off Orange Plank Road.
Willaford said the fire was in an attached garage at the home and appears to have started around the electrical breaker box in the garage.
The homeowner was working in a separate, detached garage when he noticed the lights flickering, the chief said. When he went to investigate, he saw the fire and called 911.
The call to the fire department was received at 5:35 p.m. and units were dispatched a minute later. The first units were on the scence by 5:41.
Willaford noted that the home is in a part of the county where there are no fire hydrants. Three county fire department tankers responded, along with one from Lake of the Woods through mutual aid.
The garage was a total loss, and the fire also destroyed a Mercedes Benz and motorcycle inside. There was some damage to the main house.
There were no injuries, Willaford noted. About 35 firefighters responded and units were on the scene until almost 9 p.m.
