Dog leads police to suspect
A Spotsylvania County man is accused of breaking into a gas station on U.S. 1 in the Massaponax area after a police dog tracked his scent from the business to a nearby motel room.
Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a burglar alarm around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Gulf Station in the 5300 block of Jefferson Davis Highway.
Deputies noticed that the back door of the gas station–convenience store was open. Further investigation revealed that the store had been broken into and items were stolen, Pearce said.
Detectives arrived and found evidence near the entryway of the store, he said.
A canine unit later tracked a scent from the business to a motel, Pearce said.
Investigators searched the room and found items linked to the break-in, he said.
The man staying in the room was questioned and subsequently arrested, Pearce said.
Andre Joelle Liggans, 27, is charged with felony breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools and larceny. He was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
