Ex-teacher found guilty in child-porn case

Former Locust Grove Middle School technology teacher Robert Jeffrey Kobman was found guilty Friday of 54 counts of felony possession of child pornography.

Following a two-day December trial, Orange County Circuit Judge Daniel R. Bouton demanded written closing arguments from both sides in the “highly technical” case. After studying those arguments, the judge ruled against the defense Friday in several matters of contention.

He denied a defense motion to declare the Virginia law in the case unconstitutional. He also found that the material stored on the computer hard drive seized from Kobman’s home constituted sexually explicit visual material, and that it clearly involved minors.

On the question of whether the prosecution had proved the defendant knowingly possessed the material, the judge noted Kobman’s own statements during the search of his home.

Kobman had been placed in the back of a deputy’s cruiser during the search. When a deputy came out to check on him after several hours, Kobman told her what they were looking for could be found in a nightstand, a pink filing cabinet and on his computer.

The judge noted that those sites were found to hold child pornography.

After finding Kobman guilty on all charges, Judge Bouton called for a report to be prepared before sentencing. That process, he said, could take 60–90 days.

In August, Kobman was found guilty in Orange County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of misdemeanor assault and battery. Those charges resulted from an incident on the last day of school in 2012 in which Kobman asked a 13-year-old eighth-grade student to follow him into a room at the back of his classroom. He then told the student that he “had always had a crush on her” and hugged her.

Judge Frank W. Somerville sentenced him to 12 months jail time, with 6 months suspended, on that charge.
