Driver, inmates injured in Caroline crash
A Virginia Department of Corrections van ran off of the road while transporting inmates just before 3 p.m. Thursday in Caroline County, injuring all nine people in the vehicle, state police said.
The crash on Old Dawn Road in southern Caroline east of U.S. 301 and State Route 2 occurred when the van veered off the right side of the road and struck a tree.
No other vehicles were involved.
Seven of the eight inmates were transported from the scene to local hospitals for minor injuries.
State police said each of the inmates taken for treatment is with a law enforcement officer.
The eighth inmate was treated at the scene for minor injuries but was not transported to a hospital.
The driver of the van was transported to Mary Washington Hospital’s trauma center for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by state police. No other details were available.
