Two wounded in Westmoreland shootout
Two men were hospitalized Thursday with life-threatening wounds following what the Westmoreland County sheriff described as a shoot-out between them.
According to Sheriff C.O. Balderson, deputies responded to a home on New Monrovia Road just outside the Colonial Beach town limits around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of shots fired. They found two men close to each other with gunshot wounds, he said.
A 25-year-old man from Montross was airlifted to Mary Washington Hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest, Balderson said.
A 33-year-old man from Maryland was taken to the same hospital by ambulance with a wound to his lower abdomen, the sheriff said. Balderson said neither man was able to speak at the time, but investigators determined that they know each other. Their names were not released.
“Our investigation shows that they got into a confrontation and they did actually shoot each other,” Balderson said.
Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, dispatchers received a call about a vehicle being shot into while traveling on Cedar Hill Road, Balderson said. That’s about 15 minutes away from where the two men were shot.
The burgundy car had at least one bullet hole on the driver’s side, he said. No one was injured.
Balderson said investigators believe the incident is related to the earlier shooting and they have persons of interest in that case. No charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon.
