Drainage problem closes Stafford road

A road in North Stafford was closed Wednesday afternoon after a pair of underground drainage pipes failed and made the road unsafe, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Although VDOT has executed its “emergency repair plans,” Furnace Road, which runs between State Route 610 and Choptank Road, could be closed for the next month.

There are signs up alerting traffic of the closure and detour signs directing drivers to use Joshua Road. There also are message boards along Route 610 and Choptank Road.

According to VDOT, two 60-inch corrugated metal pipes had rusted at the base, which caused the pipes to sink. That created a dip in the road.

About 4,200 vehicles travel on Furnace Road each day, according to VDOT’s 2012 traffic count.
