Orange woman dies in weekend house fire
Virginia State Police are investigating a weekend house fire that killed a 73-year-old Orange woman.
The Orange Volunteer Fire Company, along with units from Gordonsville, Barboursville, Rapidan and Orange County were called around 11:30 a.m. Sunday to a home on Berry Street in the town of Orange.
Firefighters removed an unresponsive woman from the burning house. The victim, identified as Mary Jane Clay, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Orange Volunteer Fire Company Chief Bert Roby said the woman was the only person inside the house at the time of the fire. He said Monday that local fire officials had not determined how the fire started.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been asked to look into the blaze, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. F.L. Tyler. Roby said local fire departments normally ask state police to investigate fires in which someone dies.
