Inn at the Old Silk Mill hit by fire
A minor fire caused quite a bit of damage to the Inn at the Old Silk Mill early Friday evening. It wasn’t the fire that caused the damage, but rather the firefighting.
Crews responded to the inn, at 1707 Princess Anne St., shortly after 5 p.m., said Deputy Chief Mike Jones of the Fredericksburg Fire Department.
Firefighters had to do some work to find the fire, which was burning on a piece of lumber in a crawl space, Jones said. They had to use chain saws to cut open the wooden floors and some walls before they could douse the flames.
“We have a lot of damage” from cutting through the floors and walls, but not necessarily from the fire, Jones said.
Fire crews wrapped up the scene at about 7 p.m. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Jones said customers would be able to return to their rooms and an event in the back section of the inn should not be impacted by the incident. The inn has 27 bed and breakfast rooms and hosts events such as weddings.
Princess Anne Street was closed while crews battled the fire.
