A 37-year-old man from Fredericksburg died early Friday after another car hit a jersey wall, went airborne and landed on top of the victim’s car, according to police.

The crash happened at about 11:15 a.m. on Interstate 95 in Dumfries, near exit 152, according to the Virginia State Police.

A Nissan Versa was headed south when it ran off the left side of the interstate and hit a jersey wall barrier. The car then went airborne and landed upside down on top of a southbound Honda Civic, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in an email.

The Civic driver, Matthew Wilkerson, of Fredericksburg, died at the scene.

The man driving the Versa and a passenger were flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life-threatening injuries, said Geller.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

The incident closed lanes on the interstate, and traffic was rerouted onto the HOV lanes until the scene was cleared.
