Road upgrades eyed for Thornburg area near raceway
The Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors is considering a proposal to upgrade roads south of Massaponax.
The work would focus on Mudd Tavern Road (State Route 606), near Interstate 95 exit 118 and where the Dominion Raceway is being built, according to a report by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The proposal would widen Mudd Tavern Road to four lanes and include the reconstruction of the bridge over Interstate 95. There also would be a pair of roundabouts.

One of the roundabouts would be at the northbound I–95 exit ramp, near the entrance to the new raceway. The other roundabout would be further east and would allow traffic better access to Mallard Road, which parallels I–95.
The project would cost upwards of $35 million.
The 160-acre Dominion Raceway is scheduled to open in early 2015. It will have an oval track for stock-car racing, a drag strip, a road course and a go-kart course.
Opponents of the raceway have said traffic is one of the main issues with the track.
