Barboursville man dies in Orange crash
Icy roads in western Orange County early Friday led to a crash that claimed the life of a Barboursville man.
Lawrence Edward Shifflett, 67, died at the scene of the 5:50 a.m. crash, according to state police spokesman F.L. Tyler.
Shifflett was driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup eastbound on State Route 33 and lost control on the icy surface of a curve just east of the State Route 652 intersection, Tyler said. The truck crossed into the westbound lane of traffic and struck a 2014 Volvo tractor–trailer.
Shifflett was not wearing a seat belt, Tyler said.
He said the driver of the tractor–trailer was not injured.
Trooper B.J. Hobbs, the investigating officer at the accident, was assisted on the scene by members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and local fire and rescue.
Route 33 was closed until 10 a.m.
