A 21-year-old Fredericksburg man was shot in the ankle while leaving a city nightspot early Wednesday, police said.
The shooting took place outside Jay’s Lounge at 2030 Plank Road in the Greenbrier Shopping Center about 1:20 a.m., city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said.
The victim said he was leaving the building, which formerly housed Mexico Lindo, and heading toward his ride when he heard a gunshot.
After the shooting he immediately jumped into a waiting car occupied by his brother and the brother’s girlfriend, who the victim had called for a ride.
It wasn’t until he was in the car that he realized he was bleeding and had been shot. He was driven to Mary Washington Hospital, and hospital officials notified police.
Bledsoe said about 15 minutes had passed between the shooting and police being notified. No one at the scene called police, she said.
The shooter was believed to be in a white Ford Crown Victoria that was seen speeding out of the parking lot and heading toward Interstate 95.
The shooter was described only as a light-skinned black male with dreadlocks.
The victim told police that he didn’t recognize the man or the vehicle and had not been in any altercations in the lounge.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call city police at 540/474-3122.
