Former mall cashier in hot water
A former department store employee faces felony embezzlement charges in Spotsylvania County.
Spotsylvania Sheriff’s deputies were called to the loss prevention office of JCPenney at Spotsylvania Towne Centre around 3 p.m. Monday.
Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office said store officers told deputies that a cashier embezzled about $1,129 from the store.
An investigation revealed that the employee had loaded and activated store gift cards without a payment, Pearce said. Also it appears several hundred dollars in merchandise were transferred to an unknown person without payment.
April Gaskins, 20, of Stafford County, is charged with five counts of embezzlement.
The employee was taken into custody and transported to the magistrate, where she was held on a $2,000 secured bond, he said.
