UPDATE: The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office still hasn’t resolved the mystery of the Christmas gifts found on the roadside about noon on Saturday, Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Pearce said Sunday evening.

The Sheriff’s Office has contacted the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and local social services departments, which have been in touch with local schools and churches to try to determine where the gifts belong, Pearce said.

The office is trying to match the tags found on the gifts with one of the organizations, he said.

A concerned citizen found a container on the side of the road in the area of Old Plank Road and Spotswood Furnace Road about noon on Saturday. It contained several wrapped Christmas gifts for a child. The citizen gave the container  to the Sheriff’s Office.

The wrapped gifts are being held at the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, 9119 Dean Ridings Lane. If anyone wishes to claim the lost package, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 540-582-7117. The rightful owner of the gifts should be able to describe the container in which the gifts were stored as well as the name and information on the tags within the container.
