Handcuffed, pajama-clad fugitive recaptured after escape in Fredericksburg
BY KEITH EPPSA Fredericksburg man ended up wet, scratched and in jail charged with a felony after he called police regarding a domestic situation involving his girlfriend, police said.
City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said an officer went to the 3400 block of Fall Hill Avenue near the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania County line about 8:30 p.m. in response to a domestic disturbance.
The man who called ended up being charged with domestic assault and battery. No one was seriously injured.
As the man was being placed into the back of a police cruiser, Bledsoe said, he threw his body into the arresting officer, causing her to lose her grip on him. He then took off running into the woods wearing handcuffs and his pajamas.
City police and Spotsylvania deputies, along with dogs from both localities, searched for the suspect for two hours before he was finally spotted on Bragg Road in Spotsylvania heading toward his home. He was cold, soaking wet and covered with scratches, Bledsoe said, and had apparently been in water.
David Blanchard, 26, was also charged with felony assault on a law-enforcement officer and escape from custody. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
