Fredericksburg man held on child-abuse charge
BY KEITH EPPS
A Fredericksburg man was jailed Tuesday after his girlfriend’s 4-month-old son was brought to a hospital with multiple broken ribs, police said.
William Schmuhl, 23, was charged with felony child abuse. Court records indicate that the abuse took place Monday at the Dunning Mills Inn off U.S. 1, where the suspect lives with the girlfriend and her child.
City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the child’s grandmother was baby-sitting Tuesday morning when she noticed that the baby seemed to be laboring while breathing. She took the child to Mary Washington Hospital, where the rib fractures and other injuries were discovered.
Detective Betsy Mason’s investigation led to an interview with Schmuhl, who was arrested later that day.
Bledsoe said the investigation is ongoing. She said police have had several contacts with Schmuhl over the past week or so, including several domestic calls and an assault against Schmuhl that does not involve the girlfriend.
