Victim identified in Spotsylvania fatal shooting
An 18-year-old Spotsylvania County man was found dead Saturday in the Sylvania Heights area of the county.
No one had been charged, but two juveniles were detained for questioning, said Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania sheriff’s office.
Deputies were called to the 200 block of Mansfield Street around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting, Pearce said.
The body of Jayson Syrkes was found along the woodline behind some homes in that area, he said.
“It appears he was shot one time,” Pearce said. He was already deceased when first responders arrived, he said.
According to Syrkes’ Facebook page, he had attended Riverbend High School and was excited to become a first-time father in a few weeks.
The investigation is ongoing, Pearce said. There is no clear motive at this time, he said.
Sylvia Digges said nothing like this has happened in the 30 years she’s lived on Mansfield Street.
“My neighborhood is very quiet,” she said. “Nothing happens. Everybody goes [about] their business. I’m surprised something happened.”
She first saw the police activity on her way home from her grandson’s birthday party. A deputy asked her where she was going but didn’t tell her what had happened, she said.
“It’s unbelievable, oh my God.”
Pearce also said this case has no conncection to the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Rodney D. Beanum in Mayfield two weeks ago. A man was charged in that case Saturday.
Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office at 540/582-7115 or text SEE911 to CRIMES (274637).
