Trouble grows for robbery suspect

A Woodbridge man charged in a Monday night armed robbery and police chase in Spotsylvania County is also accused of a robbery in Orange County.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the Dollar General Store at 36108 Goodwin Drive in Locust Grove was robbed at gunpoint at 5:15 p.m. Monday.

A man wearing a ski mask got away with an undisclosed amount of money, said Major Michael LaCasse of the Orange Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported, he said.

A surveillance photograph of the man was sent to law enforcement in neighboring localities on Monday evening.

In less than an hour, Orange received a call from the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office about a man arrested for an armed robbery at an area grocery store that same evening.

Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Pearce said a man walked into the Food Lion on Salem Fields Boulevard at 6:04 p.m. with a semi-automatic firearm demanding money from employees and customers.

A female employee was assaulted during the robbery but did not need medical attention, Pearce said.

The man left with an undisclosed amount of money in a vehicle, he said.

Witnesses were able to provide 911 operators with a description of the man and the vehicle, which was spotted a short time later by a Spotsylvania deputy.

Lt. Steve Clem saw the vehicle driving along Plank Road (State Route 3) near Spotsylvania Towne Centre and attempted to stop him, Pearce said.

The man then tried to flee and crashed his car into another vehicle in the westbound lane of Plank Road at the main entrance to the Central Park shopping area, Pearce said.

Plank Road was closed in that area for more than an hour as a result of the crash.

The driver of the car, Andre Jovon Jenkins, 30, is charged with two counts of armed robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, felony eluding and brandishing a firearm in Spotsylvania.

Orange authorities said Tuesday they were preparing charges against Jenkins in the Locust Grove robbery.

Jenkins is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
