Police seek information in drive-by shooting
A Montross man was shot in the leg early Sunday during what police believe was a random drive-by shooting in King George.
The incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. on Windsor Drive between U.S. 301 and Ferry Dock Road in the Dahlgren area, Sheriff Steve Dempsey said.
The 24-year-old victim told police he was heading east when two vehicles traveling in the same direction passed him. When the second vehicle passed, the victim said he heard a noise and initially thought the vehicle had struck his car.
Moments later, Dempsey said the man felt a burning sensation in his leg and discovered that the leg was bleeding. The man then drove himself to Mary Washington Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. The Sheriff’s Office wasn’t called until after the man got to the hospital.
Dempsey said police found two bullet holes in the car, one in the driver’s door and one in the rear panel where a bullet apparently entered the trunk. A 23-year-old woman who was with the victim was not injured.
Dempsey said the victim reported having no altercations with anyone that evening and had no idea why anyone would have shot at his car. The only description of the other vehicle was that it was a dark, mid-sized passenger car.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (540) 775-2049.
