A Fredericksburg resident claims he was stabbed by a stranger for no apparent reason while on his porch Thursday night, police said.

City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Myrick Street in Mayfield subdivision.

The 38-year-old victim said an unknown male walked up to his porch and asked for a cigarette.

The victim said he was handing over the cigarette when the young man stabbed him in the hand with a knife with no provocation.

Bledsoe said the victim got a friend to take him to the hospital, where he received stitches for his wounds.

His attacker, who fled on foot after the incident, was described as a black male in his 20s wearing dark jeans and a dark hoodie with the hood pulled up.

Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 373-3122.
