Man facing charges in crash that killed two
A Fredericksburg man is facing a misdemeanor reckless driving charge in connection with a Nov. 9 Caroline County crash that killed a Colonial Beach couple.
Michael E. Lastes, 44, is expected to appear in Caroline General District Court on Dec. 18.
After consultation with the Caroline Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, charges were filed last week, Sgt. Thomas Molnar of the Virginia State Police said Thursday.
According to state police, Michael Bailey, 52, and Constella Bailey, 51, were pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. 1 and State Route 207 in Caroline. The crash was reported around 1:15 p.m. on Nov. 9.
The Baileys’ 26-year-old son, Deonn Bailey of Colonial Beach—the driver of a Ford F–150 pickup truck the Baileys were riding in—and his 4-year-old son suffered minor injuries.
Police said the adults were buckled in and the 4-year-old was properly secured in a child safety seat.
The other vehicle was a 2011 Kia Sorento, driven by Lastes. He was not injured, but his wife was taken to Mary Washington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the Kia was traveling east on Route 207 and the Ford was heading north on U.S. 1 when they collided. The impact sent the truck off the road and into a utility pole.
