Good Samaritans retrieve woman’s purse
A young Spotsylvania man was chased down by two brothers and held for police after he forcefully took a purse from woman in the parking lot of the Central Park Walmart Wednesday night, police said.
Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the 55-year-old city woman had just returned her shopping cart to its proper place in the parking lot just before 9 p.m. when the suspect came up from behind and grabbed her purse. The victim struggled with him briefly before he ripped the purse out of her hands and took off running.
The woman screamed and two brothers, ages 31 and 28, took off after the suspect. They caught and tackled him in the parking lot and held him down until police arrived. A 50-year-old Colonial Beach man arrived after the suspect had been caught and assisted the brothers in securing him, Bledsoe said.
No one was injured and the woman’s purse and all of its contents, including credit cards and a cell phone, were returned to her.
Benjamin David Durand, 19, was charged with strongarm robbery, three counts of credit card larceny and two counts of petty larceny. Durand was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
