Caroline High School student dies after collapsing in gym class
Thomas Wendell Wheeler II, a 15-year-old student at Caroline High School, died after collapsing in gym class during a physical fitness test Tuesday afternoon, Caroline County officials said.
The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 12:02 p.m. saying a student was unconscious in the gym, Maj. Scott Moser said. Deputies and emergency crews arrived within three minutes and performed CPR on the teen, Moser said.
The student died not long after arriving at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, Moser said.
Schools Superintendent Greg Killough said the student had been taking a fitness test in a 10th grade physical education class.
Thomas Wheeler’s parents were notified and instruction at the school continued while emergency crews were in the building, Killough said.
Killough said Thomas participated in sports.
“He was a wonderful young man, well-liked by his peers,” Killough said.
Grief counselors and local pastors will be at the high school on Wednesday, he said.
“We’re keeping the family in our thoughts and prayers,” Killough said. “A lot of students are hurting right now.”
Killough said parents of all students were notified Tuesday night.
