Second rooftop bar envisioned

MORE: Read more news from Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg’s second rooftop bar could open this spring next to its first one.

Luigi Castiglia hopes to start work by the end of the year on a 3,000-square-foot rooftop bar and restaurant atop his Castiglia’s restaurant at 324 William St.

His building is just down the block from Blake and Aby Bethem’s Vivify Burger & Lounge, which recently opened with a rooftop bar.

Castiglia is working with Fredericksburg building officials on plans for the rooftop bar, which he hopes to open by April. He needs to find about 15 parking spaces and is hoping to get adjacent property owners to allow his customers to park in the evenings.

The downstairs restaurant and bar will remain open throughout the project, and Castiglia doesn’t expect significant disruptions.

The restaurant and “sky bar” will have a separate name from Castiglia’s, but the name has not yet been determined. There also will be a separate menu featuring prime rib, steaks, seafood and appetizers. A smoker could be installed to cook the meats. Live music is planned.

Customers will enter the rooftop bar from an L-shaped staircase built near the bathrooms and kitchen in the main Castiglia’s restaurant space below. There will be separate bathrooms upstairs. The rooftop bar likely will be open for happy hours, dinner, late nights and Sunday brunch.

Plans call for a bar and kitchen in the middle of the rooftop, and tables and booths around the perimeter. People will be able to look out over William Street, and gas-burning fire pits are planned at some of the tables.

The rooftop bar will continue the makeover of Castiglia’s William Street building. He added a tapas bar in the space that used to be a market called Bella Italia, and before that renovated the main restaurant’s interior and added a wood-burning brick oven. A room in the back for private functions was recently completed.

Castiglia plans to work with business partner and contractor Ciro Marchetti on the rooftop project, as he has done on the downstairs renovations.
