City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the incident occurred at the mother’s home in Wellington Woods on Lafayette Boulevard. The victim and his 8-year-old brother were visiting their mother for the weekend. Their father is dead, police said, and they live with their paternal grandparents.
Bledsoe said police were told that the boy had somehow gotten ahold of a handgun and shot himself through the hand. Police are investigating the story.Melissa Pendleton, 29, and Jemmell Conway, 31, were both charged with felony child neglect and a misdemeanor charge of allowing a child to have access to a firearm. Conway was also charged with possessing a firearm as a felon.
He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond and Pendleton was jailed under a $2,500 bond.
The child is expected to recover from his wound, police said.
