Errant squirrel puts city in dark
If you live in Culpeper and lost power Thursday morning, blame it on the growing squirrel population.
At about 8:30, a squirrel got into the town’s East Chandler Street substation and caused a main power line to short circuit. About 2,700 customers at the south end of town, especially the Lakeview subdivision, lost electricity until about 10 a.m. when temporary repairs were completed.
Permanent repairs will necessitate a three-hour planned outage (essentially to the same customers affected Thursday) beginning Saturday at 3 a.m.
“Because the [damaged] area is hard to reach, we must de-energize the line to safely make repairs,” said light and power director Mike Stover. “We hope to be able to make the necessary repairs in less than three hours.”
The squirrel perished during the incident.
