City gas station robbed at gunpoint
An armed robber got away with an undisclosed amount of money Tuesday, despite a bystander’s best effort to alert police to the robbery before it occurred.
The robbery took place about 7:30 p.m. at the Gulf Station at 2120 Plank Road. City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the robber entered the store, pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded money from the cash register. The clerk handed over the money and the robber quickly left. He was last seen running in the direction of Altoona Drive.
Bledsoe said an employee at the neighboring BP station had called 911 just before the robbery took place. The employee reported that he had gone out the back of his store and saw a masked man dressed in all black heading toward the Gulf station. About 30 seconds later, while the man was still on the phone with police, he saw the same man running out of the store.
Police verified that a robbery had just taken place and searched the area using a police dog. But the robber was not found.
He was described only as a thin white man wearing all black clothing with a mask over his face.
