Man charged with theft of air conditioner
A Stafford County man was arrested Sunday after an alert passerby saw him stealing an air-conditioning unit, police said.
Sheriff’s Maj. David Decatur said the incident began about 4:37 p.m. The witness was driving north on U.S. 1 near Potomac Creek when he saw a white work truck backed up to an air conditioner at 1080 Jefferson Davis Highway, a former nursing home. The witness, who has no known connection to the property, became suspicious and drove by a second time. The truck and the suspect were still there, but the unit was gone. The truck was then driven hurriedly through the grass and onto the highway. The witness followed the truck and called the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Mark Coffman went to 1189 Ramoth Church Road, where the witness said the vehicle was parked.
Decatur said the driver was just getting out of the truck when Coffman pulled up. The air-conditioning unit and a number of tools were in the back of the vehicle.
Lee A. Dotson, 48, who lives on Ramoth Church Road, was charged with grand larceny, larceny with the intent to sell and possession of burglary tools. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under a $2,500 bond.
