Culpeper woman killed in car crash
A 21-year-old Culpeper woman was killed Sunday night when she was thrown from the car in which she was a passenger during a crash on northbound U.S. 522 near Norman.
Jessica Ashley Ruth Johnson was pronounced dead at Culpeper Regional Hospital, according to Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ana Ortiz.
About 10:30 p.m. a 2000 Ford Focus operated by 19-year-old John H. McDevitt V, apparently went out of control while traveling toward Culpeper just east of State Route 633. The driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to spin, hit a ditch and roll, Ortiz said.
The car then hit a fence, mailbox and planter before coming to rest in a yard.
Johnson, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was ejected during the crash. Her brother, Thomas Anthony Johnson, 18, who was a rear-seat passenger, was also seriously injured.
Both McDevitt and Thomas Anthony Johnson were flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment. Their conditions were unknown Monday afternoon.
McDevitt was driving with a suspended license, Ortiz said.
No charges have been filed. The investigation is continuing.
