Women looking for a little bit of drama
Three King George County women are issuing a casting call for anyone interested in forming a Christian community drama group.
Elizabeth Lee and Lorrie Gump, who have worked on productions at Shiloh Baptist Church, along with the Rev. Earlene Cumberlander, want to produce family-friendly dramas.
They’re hosting an organizational meeting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the King George Citizens Center, off State Route 3.
“We know there are many talented people in the county—musicians, singers, actors, artists, costume designers, onstage and backstage—who are looking for an outlet,” Lee said. “We’re hoping for a large turnout.”
Lee has acted and directed productions at Shiloh since 1995 and said the church no longer can support the efforts.
Gump, the county’s general registrar, is “a wonderful actress with an outstanding voice,” Lee said. Cumberlander also has a beautiful voice, Lee said, and “is an excellent storyteller and writer and full of enthusiasm.”
Lee hopes others will join them. She’s heard the idea discussed for years and believes its time has come.
“This is no fly-by-night idea,” she said. “It’s been burning for a long time.”
The women plan to contact area churches, looking for people who want to be involved in all aspects of drama and music. That includes actors and actresses as well as seamstresses and scene workers, those who build sets and those with technical expertise.
“This will not be a one- or two-person show,” Gump said. “This will be a community event.”
Lee said that in past productions at Shiloh, she’s had to play a number of different roles.
“It would be nice to concentrate on one thing and not worry about acting, directing, casting, props, costume, staging, etc. all at once,” she said. “From the reaction I’ve heard so far, there is an interest.”
