UMW looks to build fans with Eagle Club
The University of Mary Washington’s athletic department will launch the newly founded Eagle Club with an Eagle Nation Day celebration on Saturday.
The Eagle Club, UMW’s first athletics booster organization, was founded this year to back the athletics department through fundraising and community support.
Ken Tyler, director of athletics at UMW, said the department wants to assume a top position among Division III athletics programs.
Tyler called UMW’s campaign the “Drive for 25,” and said he hopes the school’s teams will consistently be featured among the division’s top 25 programs.
The Saturday celebration begins at 11 a.m., when gates open and attendees have a chance to meet Redskins Hall of Famer Darrell Green, who is now employed by UMW, and Olympic gold-medal swimmer and Fredericksburg native Jeff Rouse.
UMW’s coaches and some of the 500 college athletes at the university will be on site to meet attendees, as well.
There will also be an inflatable obstacle course and horse and pony rides.
At noon, free hot dogs and hamburgers will be served, and the Eagle Club launch ceremony will commence. Green and Rouse will speak.
Those activities are followed by two free athletic contests: the men’s soccer game against Kean University at 1 p.m., and a volleyball match against Methodist University at 4 p.m.
Tyler said he expects a large crowd so people should come out early.
Tyler hopes those who attend leave with an appreciation of what the UMW athletics department is and what it can do, and he hopes they will return to attend more games.
“It’s a celebration,” he said. “And a real way to make connections between UMW and the community.”
