Fatal punch results in felony charge
A drug dispute involving about $80 led to a punch that resulted in the death of a young Stafford County man earlier this year, according to statements made in a Stafford courtroom Friday.
Logan Peter Dalgarn, 23, of Stafford is charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a single punch that resulted in the June 1 death of 20-year-old Kwesi Tyree Franklin.
A preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday in Stafford General District Court was continued in order to give prosecutor Amy Casey more time to interview witnesses. The hearing is now set for Nov. 1.
According to police and court records, Franklin left his home on Donelson Loop about 10:30 p.m. May 30 to go skateboarding. Less than 40 minutes later he was found unconscious in front of a home on Malvern Hill Court, about a quarter-mile away.
Police initially thought he’d had a skateboarding accident, but later got information from a witness that Dalgarn had punched Franklin. Franklin’s head hit the asphalt and he suffered brain swelling and three skull fractures, court records show.
Police searched Dalgarn’s home on Malvern Hill Court in search of weapons such as sticks, baseball bats and metal pipes, but found nothing connected to the incident.
Defense attorney Mark Gardner said it is his understanding that his client and Franklin were at odds over a drug deal that had gone bad a few weeks earlier. When Dalgarn saw Franklin out skateboarding, he confronted him about it. Witnesses said that Franklin was conscious when Dalgarn, who weighs about 145 pounds, left.
