IT company looks to land in area
CMIT Solutions, an IT service provider for small- to medium-size businesses, is looking to open a franchise in the Fredericksburg area.
The company started as a small, computer-support company in Austin, Texas, in 1995. It is now a leading provider of managed services and other computer consulting services with 130 locations nationwide, including 25 in Virginia.
Sheri Vandermause, vice president of franchise development, said CMIT Solutions just awarded its fifth franchise in Northern Virginia, and is expanding into the central and southern parts of the state. She said the company is interested in this area because it is “a small-business-friendly community,” and has a number of retired military personnel.
“We like to have veterans. They work hard. They’re professional, and they represent our brand really well,” she said. Four out of the five franchisees in Northern Virginia are veterans.
The other typical recruit has worked in the corporate world, and understands the challenges that small- and medium-size businesses face.
“We need people who can work with businesses, that understand that small businesses need technology to maintain a competitive advantage,” Vandermause said. “They aren’t going to get on the floor and fix a problem themselves, but they need to be familiar with technology.”
Franchises cost $50,000 to $55,000, although veterans get a 20 percent discount. The company provides five weeks of training for franchisees so they can help businesses evaluate their needs and offer solutions. Then they typically run their franchise out of a home office, usually with just the help of a technician and a bookkeeper at first.
“Our largest franchise has 13 employees,” Vandermause said.
CMIT Solutions provides a variety of services that are less expensive for a business than having an IT person on staff, yet help is available 24/7 from a central office. These services include remote backup and disaster recovery, cloud computing and help desk software.
“We want clients to have peace of mind so they can focus on their core business, while we take care of making sure everything runs the way it’s supposed to,” Vandermause said.
