Culpeper police ID man killed by train
Culpeper police identified the man who was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train Thursday as Elijah Nathaniel Rivera, 19, who has no fixed address.
A positive identification was made Friday, according to a news release from the town of Culpeper.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances of Rivera’s death while awaiting the official results of an autopsy and toxicology tests, which could take months.
Rivera was with two other men on the tracks about 150 yards north of the intersection of Fairfax Street as the Amtrak Crescent approached at about 8 a.m.
When the engineer sounded the horn and began to brake the train, which was traveling around 40 mph, two of the men safely got out of the way. Police said Rivera continued to sit on the crosstie. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
