Police allege man fought with deputies
A Spotsylvania County man is facing felony charges after police say he fought with deputies during a traffic stop.
Spotsylvania deputies performed a traffic stop near the intersection of Leavells and Courthouse roads around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday for a minor traffic violation, said Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies recognized one of the passengers in the vehicle as being wanted on charges in Fredericksburg and attempted to make an arrest, Pearce said.
While deputies were trying to make the arrest, the man began to fight the deputies and then ran away on foot, Pearce said, but was chased and apprehended about a block away.
He began to fight again and resisted arrest before deputies were able to take him into custody.
Jackie O’Neil, 26, is charged with assault on law enforcement, escape by use of force, possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also had two arrest warrants in Fredericksburg for grand larceny.
He is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
