On Saturday, 10 local officials will come together and dance for a good cause.
The University of Mary Washington will host the inaugural “Dancing with the Fredericksburg Stars,” a competition modeled after the popular ABC television show, beginning at 7 p.m.
The competition in UMW’s Dodd Auditorium will be followed by an outdoor “Champagne Under the Stars” reception.
“Dancing with the Fredericksburg Stars” has paired regional leaders of the community with professional dancers from Strictly Ballroom Dance Studio in Fredericksburg to compete for the People’s Choice Award. A panel of judges will offer commentary following each performance.
Dancing in the event will be Marty Bass, retired judge; Caressa Cameron–Jackson, former Miss America; Rick Hurley, president of UMW, Ellen Killough, former president and CEO of the Fredericksburg Area Museum & Cultural Center; Bill Young, CEO of Virginia Partners Bank; Melanie Kay–Wyatt, principal of Walker–Grant Middle School; Susan Spears, president of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce; Fred Rankin, CEO of Mary Washington Healthcare; Richmond McDaniel, commercial real estate broker; and Mary Katherine Greenlaw, mayor of Fredericksburg.
Private donations, sponsorships and proceeds from ticket sales to the “Dancing with the Fredericksburg Stars” event will go toward the creation of a UMW Performing Arts in the Community Scholarship.
Once endowed, the new scholarship will reward full-time, degree-seeking students residing in the Fredericksburg region who are in good academic standing and excel in the performing arts: music, theater or dance. Tickets for reserved seating are currently on sale through Aug. 17 online, but buying early is recommended since UMW expects the event to sell out.
Mary R. Corbin, coordinator of special projects for UMW, said she came up with the idea after hearing about a similar event held in Richmond.
“It seemed like so much fun and I thought it would be perfect for us,” she said.
Corbin said other than being a fun local event, it also supports a good cause.
“It is hard to fund a college education,” Corbin said. “This supports students.”
