Church starts drive to help food bank
The Fredericksburg Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding a Fred “Can” Do food drive to collect nonperishable food items for the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank.
A stake is a group of congregations. The Fredericksburg Stake includes 15 congregations in the city of Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Culpeper, Orange, Stafford and King George.
The drive will be held at the Giant grocery store in the Harrison Crossing Shopping Center and the Giant on Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania County.
Church representatives will be at the Harrison Crossing drive this Saturday, as well as Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and Sept. 21.
They’ll be at the Giant on Courthouse Road on Aug. 17.
In addition, people can contribute items in drop boxes at either store on any day between Saturday and Sept. 27.
The eventual goal for the food bank is to collect 70,000 pounds of food as a “Mountain of Food” at Old Mill Park on Sept. 28. There also will be a 5K run at the park that day.
Hours for the park activities are 7 a.m. to noon.
Michael Bradshaw, who is coordinating the LDS churches’ efforts at the grocery stores, said he hopes to collect 10,000 pounds as their contribution toward the final total.
