New editor named for The Free Lance-Star

Phil Jenkins has been named editor of The Free Lance–Star.

Jenkins had served as the interim editor since Ed Jones’ retirement in March, and he had been managing editor since 2009. He joined the FLS in 1998 as a local news editor.

Jenkins has 30 years of experience in the news business. He previously worked as managing editor of the Anniston Star and as state editor for United Press International, both in Alabama.

FLS Publisher Nick Cadwallender, who announced the decision Monday, said the company conducted a nationwide search and determined Jenkins was the strongest candidate to lead the company’s print and digital news operations.

Jenkins, who is married and has two daughters,  lives in southern Stafford County.

“I’m honored to be chosen to lead this great newspaper and its talented staff,” Jenkins said. “I look forward to working with Nick and my colleagues to continue The Free Lance–Star’s tradition of outstanding community journalism.”
