One hospitalized after city brawl
At least one person was taken to Mary Washington Hospital Thursday after a reported brawl in Fredericksburg’s Mayfield area.
No one has been charged in the incident. That’s because statements from witnesses and alleged victims have yet to give a clear picture of the incident.
“We’re not quite sure what we have here,” Natatia Bledsoe, Fredericksburg Police Department spokeswoman, said Friday.
Police responded to the area of Airport Avenue, near the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds, at 2:40 p.m. after reports of a large fight, according to Bledsoe. She said police were told the brawl moved from the nearby 7–Eleven on Dixon Street to Airport Avenue.
When police arrived, the large group had vanished.
But officers did find three men alongside Dixon Street, along with another witness, who said they were chased by about 15 people from the convenience store area.
None of the three was able to identify the assailants. Two of the men had lacerations and abrasions, and the other had been doused with pepper spray.
One of the men was taken to the Fredericksburg hospital for treatment.
A short time later, police responded to the hospital for a report of a disturbance involving a large group of men who were possibly connected to the earlier altercation. Hospital employees called police when the group became loud and raucous, Bledsoe said. She added that the group had no known tie to the fight.
Bledsoe said one other man who suffered a puncture wound had arrived at the hospital shortly after the fight, but he told police he wasn’t involved in the brawl.
The investigation continues.
