Man arrested for theft in Stafford neighborhood
BY KEITH EPPS / THE FREE LANCE–STAR
A Stafford man was arrested Saturday after a neighbor told police that he caught him stealing items from a vehicle.
Stafford County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bill Kennedy said the victim had already confronted the suspect when Deputy Sandy Lawrence was dispatched to Chriswood Lane in off Poplar Road in northwestern Stafford about 7:20 a.m.
The victim looked outside after hearing his dogs barking and saw someone in his vehicle.
The suspect was in a neighbor’s driveway when the victim approached and demanded his property back.
The suspect handed back one item and appeared ready to hand over the rest when the victim noticed his knife in a bag the suspect was carrying, Kennedy said. The victim backed away at that point and told the suspect to leave, even though the suspect never made an aggressive move.
The victim told the deputy that he recognized the suspect as being someone from the neighborhood and Lawrence went to the man’s home on nearby Citation Court.
The suspect denied knowing anything about the theft, but the victim positively identified him.
Robert Jones, 21, was charged with grand larceny. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under a $1,500 bond.
