A man is in critical condition after police say he was shot in the head by his 77-year-old girlfriend in Spotsylvania County Saturday.
According to Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Wilderness Presidential Resorts off of State Route 3 around 8:30 a.m. for a reported shooting in one of the camping trailers on the campground.
When deputies arrived, they found a 62-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, Pearce said.
He was transported to Mary Washington Hospital where he underwent several hours of surgery to remove bullet fragments from his head. He was in a coma early Sunday morning, Pearce said.
After a crime scene investigation, the man’s girlfriend, 77-year-old Lillian Mae Levy of Maryland, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. and charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
She is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
The man is from Richmond and they frequently meet at this location for weekend getaways, Pearce said. Neighbors in the area said they didn’t suspect any issues between them.
A motive was unclear on Sunday.
A search warrant was executed at the residence and the suspect’s vehicle. Pearce said a weapon was recovered and sent to the state crime lab for analysis.
The investigation is continuing.
