Joint Spotsy hearing for Dominion Raceway is next month
Spotsylvania County will make a final decision on the proposed Dominion Raceway on May 28.
That’s when the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission will hold a joint public hearing at 6 p.m. on the raceway’s requests for a rezoning and special-use permit, Planning Director Wanda Parrish said Thursday.
Typically, those bodies hold separate public hearings. But supervisors this week voted to have a joint hearing at the request of the raceway, which wants to expedite the approval process.
The Planning Commission makes recommendations, and supervisors have the final say on the raceway application. Both normally cast votes after public hearings. The raceway must also receive Virginia Department of Transportation approval for its proposed entrance, which is closer to Interstate 95 ramps than guidelines allow. VDOT will make a decision after the vote on the raceway’s rezoning request.
Raceway developer Steve Britt hopes to open the facility in spring 2014 on 160 acres at the northeast corner of the Thornburg exit off
