Crash shuts down multiple lanes of I-95 southbound
By ROBYN SIDERSKY
A fatal accident in Stafford County stalled southbound traffic for hours on Interstate 95 Thursday afternoon.
According to state police, the accident happened around 1 p.m. when a Virginia man stepped out of his car on the right shoulder of the highway and into the path of a tractor–trailer, which was unable to stop.
The man, who died at the scene, had pulled his 2007 Ford Focus onto the shoulder just south of exit 148, not far from Marine Corps Base Quantico.
State Police did not release the man’s name because they were in the process of notifying his next-of-kin.
The tractor–trailer driver was not injured.
The accident immediately closed two lanes of I–95. Then, just after 2 p.m., all lanes were closed, re-opening about an hour later.
For a period of time, traffic was diverted off the highway at exit 148.
Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, Stafford County Fire & Rescue, Quantico Fire & Rescue and the Virginia Department of Transportation assisted state police with traffic control and detours.
