Spotsy man faces hit-and-run charge in girlfriend’s death
A Spotsylvania County man is charged with felony hit and run after his girlfriend was found dead along a dirt road driveway.
Spotsylvania dispatchers received an emergency call around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday from a man stating he found his girlfriend lying in the road with a gash on her head and that she was unresponsive.
When deputies and fire–rescue workers arrived at Marshall Tract Court in the Ivy Hill area of western Spotsylvania, they found 35-year-old Sarah Hitt lying in the driveway. She was pronounced dead at the scene, said Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Pearce.
Pearce said that investigators learned that Hitt and her longtime off-and-on boyfriend, 37-year-old Herbert Hoover Clarke Jr., were having an argument while driving toward his residence earlier that evening.
Investigators said that Hitt became upset during the argument and attempted to leave the moving vehicle, Pearce said.
She was killed when she rolled under the wheel, he said.
Pearce said Clarke “did not stop to render aid and continued on for several blocks before stopping to let a neighbor know what happened.”
The investigation is continuing.
