UMW among tops in Peace Corps volunteers

BY LINDLEY ESTES

The Peace Corps has named the University of Mary Washington among the top volunteer-producing colleges for the 10th year in a row.

The list released Feb. 5 ranks UMW third among schools with less than 5,000 undergraduates. The school has 21 alumni serving in the Peace Corps.

According to a university news release, UMW placed first among schools in the same category in 2011 and 2012, with 30 and 32 alumni serving in the Peace Corps, respectively.

Gonzaga University placed first and St. Olaf College came in second in this year’s ranking of small schools.

Two hundred and thirty UMW alumni have served since the Peace Corps’ inception in 1961.

Christina Eggenberger, director of service at UMW, said the school’s mission of creating global citizens fits well with the Peace Corps.

“We offer a number of service activities,” she said. “And our students are aware of global issues through classes and activities on campus We draw a certain type of student that is globally aware.”

Interested students now enrolled at UMW can attend an information session held by the Peace Corps at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Room 411 in Lee Hall.
