A random traffic stop led to three arrests that police believe are connected to 69 vehicle break-ins in the city of Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

A patrol deputy, who stopped a vehicle Thursday night for a traffic infraction, noticed some suspicious items in the vehicle, said Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives were called in to investigate and they determined the property had been stolen during a string of vehicle robberies in seven area subdivisions, he said.

Recent vehicle break-ins had been reported in the Fox Point, Crown Grant, Lee’s Parke, Hamilton’s Crossing, Lee’s Crossing, Pelham’s Crossing and Parkwood subdivisions in Spotsylvania, Pearce said. Most of the vehicles targeted had the doors unlocked, Pearce added.

Neighborhoods in the city and Stafford were not identified.

Eugene Evans Jr., 18, of no fixed address, Antoneio M. Chapman, 19, of King George County, and Deandre Rice, 22, unknown address, are charged with possession of stolen property with the intent to sell, grand larceny, petit larceny, receiving stolen goods and conspiracy.

A March 20 court date is scheduled in Spotsylvania County General District Court.

A juvenile is also being questioned about involvement in the case, Pearce said.

More charges are possible.

Detectives have recovered some of the stolen property and will be contacting the victims to arrange for the items to be returned, Pearce said.
