Falmouth Bridge reopens to traffic

UPDATE: According to VDOT’s Kelly Hannon, a bucket truck being used for the Falmouth Bridge concrete project hit the sign, which caused a light bar to fall into the roadway this morning. The sign did not fall, but the light bar blocked all lanes, shutting down the bridge to traffic. The light bar, which was broken and removed from the scene, was attached to the sign for nighttime drivers.

Hannon said VDOT crews checked the sign for structural damage before reopening the lanes. They will soon do a full inspection of the sign’s structure.

No one was injured in the incident.

UPDATE: VDOT reports that all lanes of the bridge have reopened as of about 7 a.m.

VDOT issued the following traffic alert this morning:

FREDERICKSBURG – Route 1 is closed to traffic at the Falmouth Bridge, at the border of Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg.

A downed sign is blocking all four lanes of traffic on the northern end of the bridge. It is estimated Route 1 will be closed for approximately two hours while the sign is removed.

Motorists should use Interstate 95 or the most convenient alternate route.
