VDOT prepares roads for overnight snow
The Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing Fredericksburg-area roads for the possible inch of snow the region will get overnight.
VDOT crews will report for duty at 10 p.m., when the snow is expected to start falling.
They will target Interstate-95 and roads such as U.S. 1 and State Route 3 and U.S. 17 to keep travel lanes open for the Thursday morning rush hour, according to a press release.
Drivers traveling overnight and Thursday morning should check road conditions on the 511 website before starting their trip and to allow extra travel time.
Here is how VDOT will label road conditions:
Clear: No conditions
Minor: Bare pavement, except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush
Moderate: Snow or ice is covering major portions of the roadway
Severe: Significant amount of snow or ice is covering the roadway, and roadway may be partially blocked or affected by drifting snow
