Waynesboro man is killed in single-car accident near Culpeper
BY JIM HALL
A Waynesboro man was killed Saturday when his car went off the road and struck a tree near Culpeper.
James L. Francis, 31, died when his 2012 Volkswagen Jetta crashed on Stevensburg Road. The crash occurred at about 2:15 p.m. near its intersection with Mount Dumpling Road.
Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police said Saturday evening that Francis was speeding south on Stevensburg Road when a Culpeper County sheriff’s deputy, going north, spotted him.
The deputy turned around to pursue. Before he could catch up, Francis went off the left side of the road at a curve, struck a tree and overturned. Francis was alone in the car and died at the scene.
Trooper B.M. Taylor is investigating the accident, assisted by the State Police accident reconstruction team, Tyler said.
